Is it just me, or do people still think branding = just a logo?

Is Branding More Than a Logo?

A growing disconnect is happening between what clients expect branding to be and what it truly entails. As the founder of a small branding studio, I frequently encounter prospects who say they “just need a logo.” When we dive deeper, however, it becomes clear that they are grappling with far more substantial challenges:

  • Confused messaging
  • Zero differentiation in their market
  • A website that fails to convey who they are
  • Inconsistent visuals across channels
  • A lack of emotional resonance with their audience

Despite these issues, many assume that a fresh logo or color palette will magically resolve everything.

I understand why branding can feel vague or overused. Yet I’m increasingly convinced that part of the problem lies with us, the branding industry. If we’re not clearly communicating the full value of branding—beyond aesthetics—clients may undervalue it. It’s worth asking whether we’ve done enough to demonstrate how strategic branding shapes messaging, differentiates a business, and builds lasting connections.
